Fire + Ice: Classic Nordic Cooking launches on October 13th! Darra’s first signing will be at Omnivore, San Francisco’s fabulous cookbook store, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. More information available at Omnivore’s website.

Oct. 21, 2015: Los Angeles – The Getty Research Institute

Darra be in conversation with Marcia Reed, chief curator at the Getty and mastermind of the exhibition “The Edible Monument: The Art of Food for Festivals.” They will be speaking at 2 p.m. in the Harold M. Williams auditorium at the Getty Center.

Oct. 23, 2015: Washington D.C. – National Museum of American History

For the Smithsonian’s first Food History Weekend, Darra will be part of a daylong roundtable looking at different aspects of food and innovation. The panel, with culinary historian Jessica B. Harris, AllRecipes.com’s Judith Dern, and chef Mariano Ramos, considers innovation on the plate. This panel starts around 3 p.m. (until 4 p.m.), and Darra will be signing books afterwards at 5 p.m.

Nov. 7, 2015: Chicago – Chicago History Museum

Darra will be giving a talk on Nordic food sponsored by the Culinary Historians of Chicago and the Chicago Foodways Roundtable. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., including a book signing. There is a $3 entrance fee, and the event is at 1601 N. Clark St., Chicago, Illinois.

Darra will discuss her new cookbook, Fire & Ice: Classic Nordic Cooking, in the context of the far north, where the exigencies of geography and climate have taught people to live from the land rather than merely on it. Her talk will explore the Nordic region’s rich culinary and cultural traditions, highlighting the commonalities among Danes, Finns, Norwegians, and Swedes while showing the ways in which history’s arc and political alliances ultimately created distinctive cuisines.

Darra will be giving a master class in Nordic food at Tom Douglas’s Cooking School.
